Competition "Flanders Lace with a Contemporary look"

The Bruges' 'Kantcentrum', non-profit organisation, 16 Balstraat, 8000 Bruges, Belgium, is organising an international competition:  ‘Flanders lace with a contemporary look’ to stimulate design in ‘contemporary’ Flanders lace.

Explanation

2021 is to be the year of Flanders Lace, once the showpiece of the Bruges' Lace school!  Flanders was seen as one of the oldest, most beautiful, finest and most elegant laces.  For many years the Kantcentrum Lace Centre and Museum has been working to study and analyse historic laces.  Passing on lace techniques through a large number of courses is also an important objective for the Kantcentrum.  Nevertheless, time does not stand still; lace is evolving.  It’s time for change.
Skills and know-how in Flanders lace can certainly be applied to a contemporary design.  It can be two or three-dimensional, monumental or very small, use new types or vibrant colours of thread, be combined with other surprising techniques or materials, and more.  The 'Kantcentrum' is setting up a competition:  ‘Flanders lace with a contemporary look’ to encourage the creation of contemporary Flanders lace. We look forward to receiving your fresh, artistically justified and original Flanders lace!
We are looking for an ORIGINAL work, designed and worked by the participant him/herself.  There are no restrictions on materials, colour or measurements.  The full competition rules and the entry form can be obtained here on this page or by e-mail request from info@kantcentrum.eu .

Entries should be received before 1 March 2021; the work itself must be handed in or arrive by post at the Kantcentrum by June 14th 2021 latest.  The work sent in will be judged in terms of originality, artistic relevance and technical perfection by an independent panel, made up of art and lace experts.   The pieces of work submitted will be exhibited during the traditional “Lace Days” in August 2021, when the winner will be announced.  Various awards are planned.
