More information:

Needle lace is a very old technique which developed from cutwork.

At the end of the 15th century, the edges of shifts and shirts which were becoming worn were reinforced with a little strip of needle lace.

Needle lace is a freestanding lace, made entirely with a needle.

In this technique, there is absolute freedom in designs and you start from nothing.

A drawing is stitched on to a double layer of fabric.  Then a doubled thread is fastened to the outline with a needle and tacking thread.  Afterwards the the lace is worked with the chosen stitches.

This type of lace is made in 5 stages:
1.       Sewing the drawing on to two pieces of fabric;
2.       Working the cordonnet - attaching the doubled thread on to the drawing;
3.       Filling - working the chosen stitches in the spaces;
4.       Working the cordonnette;
5.       Removing the lace from the pattern.

You can take a course in needle lace at the Kantcentrum (Bruges Lace Centre and Museum).

The lessons cover the basic needle lace stitches,  making a piece of lace, hexagons and working the cordonnette to finish the lace.
