PERMANENT COLLECTIONS

In the lace museum the accent is on contextualising the origins of lace and on some early developments. Displays include the basic techniques and movements, types of lace and their geographical origins, the lace industry then and now and lace teaching in Bruges. The craftsmanship and aesthetics of lace are honoured and, in addition, the contemporary and international appeal of lace is featured. The museum was developed with multimedia and interactive displays. In addition to visiting the museum, you can watch the Kantcentrum’s bobbin lacemaking demonstrations in the afternoon. This is included in the ticket price. All this allows you to experience the fascination of lace in Bruges and far beyond.

War Lace

War Lace

The temporary departure of our large piece of War Lace left a gap in the display case in our exhibition, which we have extended for a while in the light of circumstances. Just in time, we were able to fill this gap through the acquisition of a butterfly in Mechlin lace. On its lower wings are the years 1914 and 1915, which indicates this piece is also War Lace. Our own collection is gradually growing through gifts of valuable pieces of lace.

A unique donation with a puzzle

A few years ago, Rosa Lejaeghere presented a splendid drawing to the Kantcentrum.  It turned out to be a drawing for Flower Work.  She got this drawing from Ms G Declercq but felt that it was too nice a piece to be left in a drawer.  Could the Kantcentrum perhaps do something with it? It is an especially beautiful pattern that measures no less than 198cm by 80cm.  Lut Braeckevelt started on 4 March 2017, worked on average four hours a day and took the last pins out of the pillow on 27 October 2020.
