Duchesse-Rosaline is a tropical hardwood species also known as Amaranth or Purpleheart. The tree grows in Central and South America, mainly in Brazil, Suriname, and Guyana.

This wood is famous for its striking color: when freshly cut, it appears grayish-brown, but it quickly transforms into an intense purple to deep violet tone, giving Duchesse-Rosaline a distinctly decorative appearance. Over time and with exposure to light, the color may darken slightly to a reddish-brown hue.

The wood has a uniform structure with a fine to moderately fine grain. The grain is usually straight but can sometimes be interlocked. It is very hard, dense, and highly wear-resistant, making it well suited to withstand mechanical stress.

Due to its high density and hardness, it can be somewhat difficult to work; sharp tools are essential. When sanded and polished, however, Duchesse-Rosaline reveals a beautiful, natural sheen.

The heartwood generally falls into natural durability class II, meaning it is well resistant to fungi and insect attack, even when used outdoors.
